Shailene Woodley's 'Homeless' Status Explained

Shailene Woodley has been making headlines recently for her whirlwind romance with Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is currently in the running to become the next host of “Jeopardy!” after the passing of long-time host Alex Trebek late last year.

The 29-year-old actress was born in San Bernadino County, California, and started modeling at the age of 4. After starring in “The O.C.” in 2003, she took the lead role as Amy Juergens in “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” from 2008-2013.

However, it wasn’t until 2014, when she took on the role of protagonist Tris in the “Divergent” series that Woodley became a household name. She most recently starred as Jane Chapman in HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” which has won 8 Primetime Emmys and countless other awards.

Although the actress seems to have it all now, there was a time only a few short years ago when she revealed that she didn’t have a house or even a cell phone!

No House?

In a pre-pandemic episode of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host Jimmy Kimmel enthused that Woodley was a “very interesting person” when she explained that she gave her house to her grandmother and started living out of a suitcase…by choice.

"I was only home for 15 days last year and I got home and I was like, 'I don't want to be alone. I want to be with my friends and family,'" Woodley said back in 2014. "So, I got rid of everything just so I could have one suitcase that would be easy to transport between houses and just kind of couch surf for a few months. But it's so refreshing and it takes so much stress away when you're like, 'Ugh, I only have one pair of jeans to wash.' It's so nice."

This shouldn’t be a surprise from the girl who once quipped, “No bra, no problem!”

But No Phone?!

It’s hard to believe in this day and age that people don’t have a cell phone, especially as someone as high profile as Woodley. She admitted that while she had a laptop, she only got a cell phone when her team insisted on it to schedule her “Divergent” press releases.

“We’ve been doing so much press and they were like, ‘Shai, we need to be able to get ahold of you, so here’s a temporary phone and we’ve taped the number to the back of it so you won’t forget,’” she confessed with a laugh. “It’s kind of hilarious.”

Without a cell phone, it’s not too surprising that Woodley isn’t a big fan of social media either. “The whole social media thing is just a little too weird for me,” she admitted.

2016 Arrest

Woodley’s adventures eventually led her to take part in the Dakota Access Pipeline protests, for which she was arrested back in 2016.

Although there were many people present at the protest, Woodley was allegedly chosen to be arrested along with 26 others "because I'm well-known (and) because I have 40,000 people watching." The arrest was livestreamed by her mother and posted to Woodley’s Facebook page.

She was charged with criminal trespassing and engaging in a riot. Originally she pled not guilty and paid a $500 fine, but she later accepted a plea deal and pled guilty in exchange for one-year probation.

Although Woodley admitted there was “so much trauma” in the experience, she later wrote an op-ed trying to bring more awareness to the cause:

“Simply feeding off the hype of a celebrity’s arrest ain’t going to save the world. But, standing together will. Please stand in solidarity with the Sioux people of Standing Rock Reservation to ensure that we still have rivers to swim in, springs to drink from and lakes to float on.”

New Romance

It seems Woodley is still a fan of traveling around the world, except this time, it’s with her fiancé, Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers shocked the world when he thanked his fiancée while receiving the MVP award during the NFL Honors ceremony in February 2021. Woodley confirmed their engagement a few weeks later, and the pair was spotted having a great time in Disney World together.

In May, they took a couples trip to Hawaii with “Divergent” co-star Miles Teller and his wife, Keleigh Sperry Teller, after attending the Kentucky Derby together. Keleigh made sure to give fans the full low-down on their trip, sharing photos on her Instagram of the group swimming underneath waterfalls, enjoying sunset dinners, and golfing on the green.

Although the couple only started dating in 2020, Woodley admits that she “would have met Aaron in any context, any space in time, because I feel we were meant to be together.”

Now that’s couple goals! And with Rodgers hinting that he’d like to embrace fatherhood in the near future, hopefully, it means that Woodley won’t have to be homeless ever again!
